Faculty Day 2025 | How much fun did we have?

The long-awaited day is behind us! On May 21st, we celebrated the annual Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics Day. So let's take a short journey through the best memories from last Wednesday...

The opening

Minutes after 10AM, energizing music resounded from the main stage, to the rhythm of which the Deans invited us closer with encouraging applause. The Faculty Day was officially opened by the Dean of FMPI, dr. hab. Marcin Marciniak, prof. UG, together with Vice-Deans: dr. Justyna Strankowska, dr. hab. Błażej Szepietowski, prof. UG and dr. Jakub Neumann, prof. UG. To celebrate the event, a phenomenal (ma)thematic cake was prepared with wishes of good fun (which - we hope - came true for everyone!).

Sport: spikeball, ping-pong, chess

In the pleasant May weather, sports attractions become almost a must! That is why, right from the start of the event, we began the tournaments: chess, spikeball and ping-pong. After a long individual and team competition, specially prepared trophies were handed to the winners. Despite the fierce competition, we are sure that the participants of all the tournaments formed, above all, a bond of cordiality and common motivation!

Rubik's cubes

For almost the entire event, an interesting, unusual attraction awaited the participants: an area with Rubik's cubes, which their owner - Dr. Piotr Arłukowicz, prof. UG, agreed to show us. The collection contained several dozen cubes of various shapes, arrangements and colors. While watching these fascinating three-dimensional puzzles, we could hear from Professor Arłukowicz himself about curiosities related to Rubik's cubes, including world records in solving their different dimensions.

Board games and filed game - for fun and rewards!

For a moment of respite and quiet, room 2.16 was full of board games, where students met in groups for friendly, faculty integration. You can believe us that the board game room was never empty!

Meanwhile, for explorers motivated to take on a more active adventure, the Deep Dive Students Scientific Association prepared a brilliant field game. "Run for a round in Ygrek" was a test of knowledge, brilliance and orientation in the field. Participants faced mathematical, physical and informatical puzzles as well as a truly cinematic story. The winners' efforts were handsomely rewarded! In addition to the field game, the Deep Dive Students Scientific Association prepared stickers for students, presented a YOLO camera that detects objects and an Arduino breathalyzer.

Something tasty

After sports, field games and dancing to live music, delicious, varied sandwiches prepared by willing students and employees of the Faculty helped to regenerate. There was also something that the participants of the Faculty Day were certainly looking forward to - the May barbecue! Students who volunteered to operate the equipment started handing out delicious sausages since 12PM. For something sweeter on the other hand, the Cake Festival was organized, also thanks to the kindness of willing people who provided colorful sweets for the event.

When science meets art and poetry...

The Faculty Day coincided with the end of two extraordinary competitions: "Science - this is art!" and "SySTEMatic Lepieje". The winners in the poetry competition about STEM poems were awarded by the Dean of FMPI, as a member of the voting committee and the originator of the initiative.

The results of the competition "Science - this is art!" were announced by its coordinator, mgr Laura Grzonka. The Chancellor of the University of Gdańsk, dr hab. inż. Aneta Oniszczuk-Jastrząbek, prof. UG, as well as representatives of the Sii company - one of the sponsors of the competition, were invited to this event.

There's music in our hearts

Throughout the entire Faculty Day celebrations, music resounded from the large stage, inspiring some to dance and have fun, while others relaxed on the colorful deckchairs. However, everyone gathered by the stage when the moment of live performances came, where students captivated the crowds with their singing and playing instruments. The same crowds later found themselves together on stage! Karaoke, an almost traditional attraction of the FMPI Day, allowed for the release of emotions, beautiful voices and music that plays in the soul of each of us!

And so, the Faculty Day has come to an end! Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us. Above all, we would like to thank all the students and employees of FMPI for all their help, both in organizing the event and cleaning up afterwards. Everything we received from you - every piece of cake, effort, and time spent - made the Faculty Day 2025 possible.

Thank you and see you next year!
