FMPI staff at the University of Cádiz | Project COVER workshops

From 7 to 11 September 2026, Prof. Paweł Żyliński, Dr. Eng. Magda Dettlaff, Dr. Eng. Łukasz Kuszner, Dr. Hanna Furmańczyk, and Michał Zakrzewski, MSc, from the Department of Combinatorial Optimization (Institute of Informatics), Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, University of Gdańsk, participated in a workshop held as part of the COVER project at the Spanish University of Cádiz (Algeciras Campus).

For five intensive days, researchers from the MSCA-SE COVER consortium met to present the results of their ongoing work, exchange ideas, and develop collaborative research on a wide range of challenges related to urban optimization.

The scientific programme reflected the interdisciplinary nature of the COVER project. It included sessions devoted to public transport, crisis management, mobile clinics and clothing collection, street cleaning, micromobility and resource balancing, facility location, armed response and network security, the 15-minute city concept, and power grids.

The workshop also featured two special training sessions. Ismael Gonzalez Yero delivered a training session entitled “Metric Dimension Related Parameters in Graphs”, while Ana Dolores López Sánchez and Eva Barrena Algara presented “Optimization in Action: Real-World Applications in Transport, Routing, and Smart Cities”.

The workshop in Algeciras marked another important step in strengthening cooperation within the COVER consortium and in translating advances in combinatorial optimization, graph theory, and operations research into solutions addressing the emerging challenges faced by modern cities.

The COVER project - “Combinatorial Optimization for Versatile Applications to Emerging Urban Problems” — funded under the MSCA-SE programme, is an initiative bringing together specialists to exchange and expand knowledge on interdisciplinary approaches to challenges related to urbanization and smart cities.
