FMPI doctors at the Stellenbosch University | Project COVER
Between November 2nd and 18th, 2025, Dr. Eng. Magda Dettlaff and Dr. Hanna Furmańczyk from the Institute of Informatics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Infomatics of the University of Gdańsk visited Stellenbosch University (RPA) as part of the COVER project. During their stay, they took part in numerous seminars and in the training session “Ruin-and-Recreate Heuristics for the Fixed Charge Transportation Problem”, delivered by Gavin Le Roux (Department of Logistics, Stellenbosch University).

The session covered such topics as: basic formulations of the fixed charge transportation problem, constructive and ruin-and-recreate (R&R) heuristics designed for efficient problem solving, variable- and memory-based extensions of the R&R heuristic, as well as broader applications of R&R heuristics in combinatorial optimization and smart city planning.
The COVER project - “Combinatorial Optimization for Versatile Applications to Emerging Urban Problems” - funded by the MSCA-SE programme, is an initiative that brings together specialists to jointly exchange and expand knowledge on interdisciplinary approaches to issues related to urbanization and smart cities.
Representatives of partner universities -Gdańsk University of Technology, Universidade da Coruña, and Gebze Technical University - also took part in the workshops and training.
