The event opened with the National Anthem of the Republic of Poland performed by the Academic Choir of the University of Gdańsk. This was followed by a formal welcome to the guests and the inaugural address by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. habil. Marcin Marciniak, Professor of UG. Representing the University’s authorities was the Vice-Rector for Development and Finance, Dr. habil. Paweł Antonowicz, Professor of UG.

Later in the ceremony, habilitation diplomas were awarded to Dr. habil. Eng. Aneta Lewkowicz, Professor of UG; Dr. habil. John Selby; and Dr. habil. Thomas Zlosnik. The doctoral promotion ceremony then took place. The official doctoral oath in Latin was read by Vice-Rector Paweł Antonowicz, welcoming to the doctoral community:

We are proud to announce that the space for over 300 people was completely filled—not only by invited guests and academic staff—but most importantly, by the students of our Faculty. Your impressive turnout is a powerful statement of your readiness to begin the new academic year. It was truly wonderful to see you there!

With our students in mind, the program also included presentations from representatives of three distinct student communities. We sincerely thank:

  • Filip Maćkowiak for representing the Living Lab Bounty Board and showing younger colleagues the path to starting their own projects,
  • Maja Zontek for the formal introduction of the newly established FMPI Student Council,
  • Mateusz Kowalczyk for presenting opportunities for personal and academic development to our new students.

After the student oath - led by our new students with the support of Deputy Dean Dr. Justyna Strankowska - it was time for the first lecture of the 2025/2026 academic year!

The lecture, intriguingly titled “The Size of the Universe”, was delivered in English by Dr. hab. Thomas Zlosnik.

Following the inauguration, first-year students had the opportunity to attend integration meetings with their program coordinators, who helped them navigate their new academic environment. Meanwhile, in the main hall of the Faculty, students could visit booths of student scientific associations and various faculty or university-wide organizations, including Univentum Labs and the Disabilities Office.

With this dynamic start to the academic year, we warmly welcome you, dear students, to our Faculty! Your presence, laughter, and enthusiasm - so visible from day one - give us hope and excitement for the future.

Welcome to the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at the University of Gdańsk!
